Happy New Year 2018!

Happy New Year from Thoroughly Peaky Jukebox!

Now that we’ve all cleared our champagne headaches and started to think about not eating cheese and crackers every day, it’s time to get looking towards the coming year…

Here is our number one reason to choose Thoroughly Modern Jukebox for your wedding, private party or corporate event this year…

Peaky. Bloomin’. Blinders.

Did everyone watch that last series?! How GOOD does everyone look in the amazing fashion of the 20s?! From Polloy (I just can't help but say her name in that Brummy accent!), to Michael, to… yes, obviously Tommy Shelby himself. Doesn’t everyone look the business?! Why not zazzle up your special day this year with a touch of 20s glam? It’s not just Great Gatsby themes that make a roaring party anymore… The Peaky Blinders are well and truly taking over!

We just loved seeing everyone at the Christmas and New Years parties we played this winter looking like they were part of Shelby Company Ltd (again, cue Brummy accent). But of course, TMJ isn’t just a band for Gatsby and Peaky parties. We suit any special occasion that requires a little something classic. By swinging up modern hits, we can add a touch a class to any special event- there doesn’t need to be a theme! Or, if you’re going all out wild with your theme, we can match that too. Boas and all.

We’ve also added some absolute bangers to our repertoire for 2018 and by the looks of the crowd in the Christmas season… they’re going to be bringing the house down all year!

We’ve already started taking bookings for the summer wedding season, so if you’re planning a special occasion in 2018, and you’re hoping to find something that will make it just that little bit more special… why not get in touch… by order of the Peaky Bloomin’ Blinders!

Happy New Year, everyone!

TMJ On the Road: Hops and Harvest Festival

It's such a joy when Thoroughly Modern Jukebox is asked to be the live music entertainment at public events such as festivals and vintage fayres. This summer, amidst private weddings and parties, we were lucky enough to be invited to play at several festivals open to the public across the UK.

It's something I really love- packing up the car and heading off around the country, meeting new people, discovering new places, and getting everyone singing and dancing along the way!

It's also fabulous because wherever we play, the guests are often dressed in the most fabulous, glamorous costumes. Whether they're Great Gatsby glitter and glamour, or 40s/50s rockabilly chic, I just love seeing everyone all dressed up and ready for a thoroughly marvellous time.

Now that I've started this blog, I want to start using all the bits of video we collect while on the road so I can keep a TMJ diary of our public performances. It means that I can share them with you all here and they will also give anyone thinking of booking us for their wedding, party or corporate event a great sneak peek into what they can expect from us live!

This first entry's video is from earlier this month when we performed in a giant big top circus tent to several hundred chilly, rain-poncho-wearing festival-goers who, by the end of our set, were all smiling and clapping and warm.

We had a thoroughly magic time bringing some vintage glamour to the muddy fields of Kent (in our wellies!) and let's hope we will go back next year!

I hope you enjoy the video!

Hello and Welcome to the TMJ Bella Blog!

Hello and welcome to the Thoroughly Modern Jukebox Blog!

My name is Bella Fitzella and I am the band leader and one of the vocalists in Thoroughly Modern Jukebox. In this blog, I am going to be sharing the inside scoop on what the band are up to. In the summer festival season, when we're being the London wedding band for lots of lovely couples, and in the Christmas party season, when we're getting glittery with parties of merry people! We'll be posting behind the scenes videos of our gigs and the band on the road. And throughout the year, we will be sharing some acoustic videos, as well as sharing our stories and photographs as the collections of each continue to grow.

But for now, let's start at the very beginning...

Thoroughly Modern Jukebox was created in November 2015, in my friend Damien's tiny apartment on Rue Montorgeuil in Paris. Damien is a fantastic guitarist and of course, Paris and jazz go hand in hand. He and I were sitting on the floor with other friends, playing music, drinking wine, eating cheese (genuinely this is what we were doing) and just being overtly... Parisian. After jamming and scatting for a while, inspired by some other musician friends of mine, Will and the People, who we had gone to see perform the night before, we performed an acoustic, jazzy cover of Drake's Hotline Bling.

When I watched a video of it while on the Eurostar on the way home the next morning... something clicked.

I have adored swing and big band music since I discovered an old Ella and Louis record in my parents' collection when I was about seven-years-old, and, being a child of the nineties, I also just happen to have a huge soft spot for pop music (thank you, Britney Spears!)

Now, since I discovered it a couple of years ago, I have been in awe of Scott Bradlee's Postmodern Jukebox for having the delicious idea to combine these two genres. I have often thought about how incredible it would be to have them play at my wedding if I ever get married, or at my 30th birthday party if I ever turn 30, which I very much plan to not do... I aim to continue Peter Pan-ing my way through life, playing dress up in wonderful costumes, singing songs and avoiding growing up at all costs!

Anyway, that day on the train home from Paris, I realised that there were probably masses of people out there just like me, who would love to be able to have that incredible, ingenious fusion of glamorous old swing music and modern day pop music performed at their weddings and parties... and then I realised... I could totally make that happen!

So, along with my dear friend Mikayl (the TMJ guitarist, DJ and sound engineer), Thoroughly Modern Jukebox was created, for all the thoroughly modern people out there who just love throwing it back to the good ol' days every now and then!

Fast-forward to nearly two years later, we are now a fully formed seven-piece band who have played at weddings, birthday parties, summer balls, festivals, vintage fairs and corporate events all over the UK from Burton-on-Trent to London to Kent!

Alongside all this, I myself (Bella Fitzella) have been singing all over London at corporate events and Great Gatsby parties, fulfilling my lifelong dream of being described as, "Marilyn Monroe meets Ella Fitzgerald", by a guest while singing at the JJ Media 10 Year Anniversary Party in July!

TMJ are looking forward to an exciting future, while keeping our heels firmly rooted in the past.

So what are you waiting for?! Check us out and stay tuned for a whole lot more from us!
